Thursday, November 17
6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Lucky Labrador Public House / Multnomah Village
7675 SW Capitol Hwy. Portland, (503) 244-2537

OPLI’s 4th annual fall fundraiser in Portland promises to be a fun and enlightening evening with guest presenter Dr. Joshua Samuels, Chief Paleontologist with the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument.

Dr. Samuels will speak on the work of the Paleontologists at the national monument, as well as their work with other partners in the region.  Despite a history of almost 150 years of research in the John Day region, ongoing work regularly uncovers new species and occurrences. Recent finds include the earliest known record of a modern beaver in North America (7 million years), the only known skull and jaws of an Oligocene pocket mouse, a new species of chipmunk, and the park’s first postcranial bone from the rare large saber-tooth Pogonodon. These finds improve our understanding of the region’s history and how Oregon has changed over the past 50 million years.
